13-Day Munich Itinerary for a Couple

Day 1: Arrival in Munich and Exploring the City

  • Check-in at a mid-range hotel near Marienplatz (e.g. in the Altstadt or Maxvorstadt areas)
  • Walk around Marienplatz, watch the Neues Rathaus glockenspiel and sample delicacies at Viktualienmarkt
  • Dinner at a romantic Bavarian restaurant, such as Spatenhaus an der Oper
  • Tip: Pack comfortable walking shoes – Munich is a city for walkers

Day 2: Munich’s Historic City Centre

  • Morning coffee and pastries at Café Luitpold
  • Visit Frauenkirche, the Residenz Palace and Hofgarten park

Day 8: Free Day for the Couple

  • Visit the Deutsches Museum (the world’s largest technology museum) or simply relax
  • Romantic dinner at a Michelin-recommended restaurant (mid-range: Zum Franziskaner or Halali)

Day 9: Day Trip to Salzburg (Austria)

  • Train to Salzburg (approx. 1.5 h)
  • Visit the old town, Mozart’s birthplace and the fortress
  • Walk in the Mirabell Gardens (filming locations from The Sound of Music)
  • Return to Munich in the evening
  • Tip: Buy a Bayern Ticket if you’re making several train journeys – it’s a more economical option

Day 10: Hellabrunn Zoo or Starnberger See

  • Relaxing day at Lake Starnberg (train 40 min)
  • Walking, boating or swimming (in summer) and lunch by the lake
  • Alternatively, visit Hellabrunn Zoo
  • Tip: In summer pack swimwear and a towel – many lakes have clean swimming water

  • Visit Hofbräuhaus (at least for a drink and the atmosphere)

Day 13: Return to Cologne/Bonn Airport
